Mock meat – A Plant-based meat is a good choice for a healthy life. But most people still have the pertaining question in their minds, is mock meat healthy or unhealthy? Mock meat provides your body with fibers, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and other useful nutrients. It also has lower level of fats that with high level can cause heart disease.

Plant-based food has become popular and is increasingly considered worldwide.

Nowadays, many people can get their protein content from plant-based meat, for different reasons related to health, ethics, and the environment.

What is Mock Meat?

Mock meat is made from soy, wheat gluten, vegetable protein or mix of those three components. Mock meat doesn’t contain any animal products like eggs, milk proteins or other animal products.

Meatless substitutes contain some of animal products such as milk or egg, and they are not suitable for vegans.

As mock meat may lack some minerals and vitamins which already exist in red meats, mock meat can be fortified with all of these nutrients in suitable amounts such as vitamin B12, iron, and zinc.

Is Mock Meat Healthy?

  • Mock meat, especially the fortified meat, can provide your body with all needed nutrients like red meat.
  • It is also lower in fat and cholesterol-free, and provides your body with fiber, which helps to avoid the exposure to animal hormones and antibiotics.
  • As a real meat, excessive use of vegan meat can be unhealthy.
  • There is no need to use it every day or several times during the day. As everything with high amount can lead to undesirable effects. So use it with moderate amounts.

Mock Meat and Real Meat – Key Differences

  • Real meat provides the body with proteins, vitamins like B12, niacin and minerals like zinc and selenium.
  • Some studies indicate that real meat can increase your body fat and cholesterol, so you need to adjust your daily intake of it.
  • On the other hand, mock meat can give you suitable amounts of protein and lower fats and cholesterol. But it doesn’t contain vitamin B12, zinc and iron.
  • Many companies of vegan meat include this important vitamins and minerals to their products.
  • Some mock meats are highly processed. So try to choose the least processed one.
  • Both mock and real meat can be healthy when used with suitable amounts.

Processed Meat & Manufactured Meat – ↑ More Salt

It is well-known that processed and manufactured products are high in salt. Also, the majority of the vegan meat is processed. It contains high salt content as a flavor and preservative.

  • Note:
  • The salt content changes majorly from a product to another. So, you need to check the label and use the one that is low in salt.
  • You need to adjust your daily salt intake to avoid high blood pressure and heart disease.
  • The best option is with sodium lower than 120mg per 100g, and also option with lower than 400mg per 100g is a good choice.

Examples of Vegan Meat Substitutes

There are many plant-based sources of protein such as:

  • Tofu

Tofu is manufactured from condensed soy milk which then pressed to form blocks like cheese from the milk. It has a mild flavor so easily mixed with other food to be tasty.

  • Tempeh

Tempeh is formed of whole soybean not only the milk as tofu. So it may have higher protein and fiber than tofu. Also, it has a stronger flavor.

  • Mushrooms

Mushroom is considered a good substitute for meat, as it has meat-like taste, high fibers, low calories and also unprocessed.

  • Beans and legumes

Beans and legumes can provide your body with protein, fiber and iron.  Beans examples are chickpeas and black beans and others.

Highly processed foods are higher in saturated fat, salt, and sugar. On the other hand, the foods made from plant-based sources are higher in vitamins, minerals and fibers so highly nutritive.

My Diet Chart: High Protein Indian Vegan Diet

A lot of my Instagram and Facebook followers have been constantly asking me what I eat throughout the day. I eat a very balanced diet throughout the day, and I occasionally keep a track of all my nutrients. I don’t eat a very expensive diet consisting of gourmet foods. I eat whatever is easily available in our sabzi mandi and grocery stores.

The idea behind the diet I eat is to eat foods that I love and something i can follow throughout my life. I have seen people try 100s of different kinds of diets, but they are often unable to stick to them. Any diet which you can not stick to or you are doing it out of desparation is useless.

You need to understand that our mind and body are connected. If the food you are eating is going to make you unhappy, then your body will produce chemicals that are going to have an overall impact on your mood and body. So what we have to do here is eat delicious foods all the time, while keeping junk food at bay.

First of all, you need to learn about me a little bit which will explain the science behind my diet.

  • I am not a professional body-builder.
  • I am not a Gym Trainer.
  • I am not a certified Nutritionist (yet)
  • I have an office, I work 8-9 hours a day.
  • I workout 4-5 times a week for 40 minutes to 1 hour.
  • I do a lot of cheat meals.
  • I love Maggi Noodles.
  • And I love eating Golgappe. I can beat you in a competition.

The Indian Vegan Diet

Our desi diet is largely vegan by default. All you have to do is not add desi-ghee into everything like most people do. I have divided this article into 3 pages so that its easier for you to follow. So, let’s see what I eat, how I eat it and when I eat it.

How Many times do I eat in a day?

I eat 5 Times a say including 3 Proper Meals, and 2 Small meals. So here is how my meals are divided.

  • 7 Am – Early Morning meal
  • 8-9 am – Gym
  • 10 Am – Breakfast
  • 1 pm – Lunch
  • 6 pm – Dinner
  • 7 pm – Evening Snacks
  • 11 pm – Sleep (unless there is a cricket match going on)

Why do I eat 5 times a day?
Because, I feel hungry 5 times a day. That’s simple. The principle is, eat when you’re hungry. Don’t starve yourself. But also, don’t overeat. Its very important if you want to stay fit. Our Indian parents or family members tend to over-feed us by saying things like “One more Roti won’t hurt you”. It will hurt you. It will unneccesarily increase your appetitie and eating habits.

Why the hell do I eat my dinner at 6 pm?
Sounds insane? But its not. The idea is that your stomach should be relaxed for 4-5 hours before you go to bed. This will also ensure that all the energy you have is burned off before you go to bed. This is extremely critical if you don’t want to gain fat. If you are skinny and planning to bulk up, then you can eat an additional meal at 8 pm. But that’s it. Its always a bad idea to eat a lot before going to sleep. There are so many researches supporting my claim.

Is Morning the best time to work out?
Yes and No. There are advantages to working out in morning. But that doesn’t mean its the best time. It is the time which is more suitable to me. For you, 7 pm might be a more suitable time. Workout when convenient.

Meal 1 – Early Morning (Before Gym)

When you wake up, you should not overload your bodies by eating a lot of carbohydrates. Its very important this is a small meal and balanced meal and made up of some liquid. Here are some combinations I would suggest. I eat them all in rotation so that I don’t get bored of eating the same thing everyday.

  • Vegan Protein Shake (Soya Milk, Protein Powder, Chia Seeds, Peanut Butter & Black Grapes)
  • Brown Bread & Peanut Butter with a small glass of Orange Juice
  • Orange Juice with Dry Fruits
  • Oats Cheela
  • Banana + Protein Shake (Water + protein powder)

Most of the times I end up drinking the protein shake, because its easy to make and delicious. I add orange juice with solid meals, because when we wake up, our body is incredibly de-hydrated. Its important that we hydrate ourselves so that we don’t feel tired or lethargic.

Most people wonder whether vegans can eat yeast. People who even eat meat-free foods for long may think about this question and both of them need a clear answer to this question.

In contrast to animals, yeasts don’t have a nervous system, and thus no capacity to feel pain or suffering. Due to this reason, yeast is usually considered a vegan food. You can eat yeast, and still become vegan, and reduce animal exploitation and brutality as well.

Yeast and its uses

  • Yeast is a single-celled fungus that naturally grows on plants and in soil.
  • Yeast can be utilized in the food-making process to augment the texture, flavor, etc.
  • Yeast is rich in B vitamins naturally.
  • Yeast is also rich in extra vitamins and minerals.
  • Yeast can be used to improve the nutritional content of foods or meals.

Yeast and Mushroom are Both Vegan Fungi

If you’re already interested in eating mushrooms as a vegan, then consuming yeast is safe. Yeast is included within the fungal kingdom along with mushrooms instead of both the plant and animal kingdoms.

Yeasts don’t use light for energy source but they consume sugar for that purpose. They can be found naturally everywhere, particularly on vegetables and fruits, as there is enough sugar for them.

You are Already Eating Yeast

If you are eating vegetables and fruits, just like anybody else, you are already eating wild yeasts and other fungi as well. There is no way to avoid them.

Different Kinds of Yeast

There are hundreds of yeast strains, some of them are injurious to humans, while others can aid in beneficial functions.

Yeast exists in different types, but only some of them are currently used to make or increase the nutrient content of foods. Some of them are the following:

  • Brewer’s Yeast

This yeast (of S. cerevisiae culture) is usually used to:

    • brew beer.
    • Be consumed as a minerals-and vitamin-rich supplement.
  • Nutritional yeast

This inactive type of yeast (of S. cerevisiae culture) is used to:

    • add a nutty, cheesy, and savory flavor to foods.
    • be fortified with extra vitamins and minerals.
  • Baker’s yeast

This yeast (of S. cerevisiae culture) can be used to make bread and other baked goods. The yeast is added during cooking and gives bread with yeasty flavor.

  • Extract yeast

This yeast (of S. cerevisiae culture) is used for food flavoring. The extracts of yeast are used to add umami flavor to packaged foods and meals or make spreads like vegemite and marmite.

Consuming Raw Yeast – Discouraged

Consuming raw yeast is usually discouraged, as it can lead to constipation, diarrhea, bloating, and cramps. It may also raise the risk of fungal infections.

But there is the S. boulardii probiotic yeast, which most people can safely eat live in probiotic supplements. Otherwise, yeasts that are deactivated through fermentation, cooking, or their making process can be safely used to enhance the flavor or nutritional content of foods or meals.

Can vegans eat yeast?

Yes, vegans can. As it is obvious that yeast is a living organism, some people may think about whether it can be involved in a vegan diet. Yeasts don’t have a central nervous system, spinal cord, or nerves. It is obvious that there is no confirmed scientific capacity to feel pain, and that is the thing that makes yeast different from animals and yeast doesn’t suffer.

Since consuming yeast doesn’t involve suffering, and includes no animal exploitation or cruelty, yeast is usually considered a vegan food.

  • If you define vegan as not eating anything that has a face, then be assured because yeast does not have any face.

Vegans Eat Yeast Comfortably and Ethically

Peta (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) is contented that the production of yeast doesn’t include animal exploitation or cruelty. If you select not to eat products produced by or comprising of yeast, you will be in a small minority of vegans. Vegans typically love their nutritional yeast and have no issue drinking vegan beers and consuming vegan bread or other foods and meals comprising of yeast.

How To Make Sure Your Yeast-Containing Foods/ Drinks Are Vegan?

How Safe is Cloudy Olive Oil?

You may have experienced it yourself. You just bought some new olive oil, and back home it does not look transparent, but cloudy. It often makes people wonder if something is wrong with it. Is there reason to worry about its safety?

Reasons for the cloudy appearance

There are various reasons for why olive oil looks cloudy. First of all, cloudy olive oil can simply mean unfiltered oil. Sometimes oil is not filtered on purpose to make sure all the flavors are maintained. What you see is olive pulp that has not had any time to settle. Over time, this settles to the bottom of the bottle. There is absolutely nothing to worry about when it comes to unfiltered oil.

Olive oil can also become cloudy when it is cooled down. Small lumps that float around in bottles of extra virgin olive oil are natural wax pallets. Just like a lot of other fruits, olives have a waxy coating on their skin. This protects them from insects and other harmful elements. When olives are pressed into olive oil, cold temperatures can cause this wax to clump together. These bits actually enrich the flavor of your olive oil. The cloudiness from the clumps will clear up when the oil reaches room temperature again. You can use this olive oil without having to worry about its quality.

What about old olive oil?

When it comes to very old olive oil, you have to be more careful before using it. I do not expect this to come as a surprise. Old olive oil is often recognizable from the slime that clings to the side. A simple sniff test can also help you out when doubting. Pour some oil in a cup and sniff. If it smells rancid, your olive oil has gone bad. If there is nothing weird about its smell, it is perfectly fine to use.

Bringing the oil back to transparency

If you do not like the cloudy look your olive oil has, it is quite easy to get it back to transparency. Note that is it not necessary to warm up olive oil before using it. Whether it is warmed up or cold, it can be used without any problems.

First of all, make sure the oil is not stored in a cold place, like a refrigerator. A research conducted by Michigan state university clearly shows the co-relation between cloudy olive oil and cold temperatures. If it is, you can move it to a warmer area to melt it a little bit. This can take a couple of days. To speed up the process, you can also give the bottle or container that contains your olive oil a bath. This means that you fill your sink with warm water and place the bottle or container in it. Do not use extremely hot water, as this can damage the quality of the oil. It takes about 30 minutes before the oil starts to become a more transparent liquid. Whenever you are happy with it, you can take it out and use it.

Remember that cloudy olive oil is completely safe to use. The cloudiness represents a richer flavor, which is quite a positive thing if you would ask me. If your olive oil smells bad, it is bad. Otherwise, there is absolutely no need to leave it untouched.
