Investigation into Commercial Chickens- Meat and Eggs

Rohit Tripathi

Published

Chicken hatcheries have some of the worst animal welfare standards on the planet. This video depicts the horrifying evidence revealed through a covert operation, into the conditions faced by chickens raised for commercial use. This is the hideous ‘existence’ commercial egg farms and hatcheries force upon these defenseless animals.  They are treated with no compassion or care; they are purely a commodity.

Filmed by Animal Equality this video has received almost 40 million views on Facebook, before it was taken down. The video shows the brutal practices that are commonplace in commercial egg farms and hatcheries all over the world.

Over 50% of hatchlings are killed in horrendous ways, hatcheries only consider hens of monetary value. This means that male chicks are disposed of within hours of hatching, by being shredded alive in industrial-grade shredder. Hens that do not meet the strict egg farm standards face a similarly cruel fate. Deformities occur with the breed of chicken used by the meat industry, known as ‘broilers.’

Animal Equality

An international non-profit organization Animal Equality works to end the inhumane treatment of farm animals. They want to ensure animals are given the protection and respect that they deserve.  They conduct multiple covert operations, to bring light to the disturbing situations in slaughterhouses and factory farms. To help people wanting to convert to veganism they have created the website loveveg.com.

MYTHS ABOUT VEGANISM THAT YOU NEED TO STOP BELIEVING IN RIGHT NOW

What??

Are you a vegan

What do you eat?

 Plants??

How do you get all the protein, calcium, and all the essential nutrients that WE CAN ONLY get from milk, meat, and eggs?

Well, HEY!

 Enough is enough!

(sharply)

This is not true!

This is just one myth we are talking about; there is still a lot of stuff about veganism that people don’t understand.

If you scroll over the internet, you will find many memes and pages depicting how vegans are so chi-chi about the food they eat, or you will discover non-expert gurus warning you about how unhealthy vegan food is.

If you have decided to go vegan after watching a video on how animals are abused for us, but you are afraid to be one, because of all the negativity you see on the internet and have lost all the hope to save the animals, well.

Hey! What is with all the negativity?

We are here to make you understand more about veganism and to help you with your vegan journey.

To get you on board with us, we have mentioned these myth-busters about veganism that were beholding you from becoming a vegan.

1. VEGANS ARE MALNOURISHED PEOPLE

Ahh…! This one is our favorite.

Vegan diets are considered to have low nutrition because vegans don’t consume milk, meat, and eggs.

Well, we have been trashed over this from the very beginning, and we disagree with it because the vegan diet is healthy.

The vegan diet is just like any other diet you have to take care of what you are putting in your body.

In fact, vegan diets are far more nutritious because vegans consume 7-10 portions of fruit and vegetables to fulfil their nutritional requirements.

Vegans are more aware of the amount of what they are consuming and have lower risks of obesity and heart diseases.

Vegan food is nutrious.

2.  VEGANS LIVE ON SUPPLEMENTS

This myth is totally baseless because vegan diets already contain all the vital nutrients that are required by the body. We get the optimal amount of necessary nutrients from vegetables, seeds, pulses, fruits.

Deficiency happens when you exclude an entire food group from your diet; for example, if you follow the keto diet, you are avoiding certain nutrients from your food.

This type of diet can cause deficiency, but according to the doctors, no diet is perfect, it is all about working with your doctor to ensure that you are getting all the nutrients.

Vegans are presumed to take various health supplements to stay healthy.
Various health supplements.

3. VEGANS CAN’T LIFT WEIGHTS

Right from childhood, we are made to believe that we can get essential proteins from animals only. Which is incredibly wrong as there are various sources to obtain protein.

For instance, tofu, nuts, seeds, grains and also there are various plant-based protein powders available in the market.

If you don’t believe us, you can see various athletes who are turning to a vegan diet and have seen great results in their performance.

Vegans can get all their proteins from the plants.

4. VEGANS ARE TAKING AWAY THE LIVELIHOOD OF DAIRY FARMS

Many dairy industry people abuse us because they think that we are taking away their livelihood, which is not valid.

If there will be no demand for dairy products, you dairy farm owners can switch to agriculture as there is going to be considerable demand for plants.

See, you can switch from cruelty to ethics.

A farmer growing crops.
Veganism will open more agricultural possibilities.

5. VEGANISM IS HARD TO FOLLOW

 No, it is not!

Veganism is a change of lifestyle, not changing your entire life. You obviously won’t achieve it overnight. There are going to be cravings, and you will find it difficult to follow veganism.

Therefore, it is essential to slowly transit and substitutes the recipes.

It is easy to follow veganism in the urban areas because there are going to be various options, therefore don’t trust this myth. Various vegans have changed their lifestyle withing 1 month and are enjoying their healthy diet.

Veganism is not boring.
Veganism is not hard to follow there are various delicious options available.

6. VEGANS PREACH ABOUT ANIMAL RIGHTS ALL THE TIME

Does being aware of animal rights means that we are preachy?

(crickets chirping)

No, being aware of animal rights means that we feel their pain and respect their life.

We live in a society where people are dependent upon animal-based products, and they are going to pick on you.

We live in a very hypocrite society where if you don’t have a cake because you are on a diet nobody will say anything, but if you say that you can’t have it because you are vegan, they are going to pick on you.

And when asked about their choice they are picked and termed as Preachy!

Thankfully, you can go to various vegan pages for support.

Animals are the sentimental beings.
Animals are the sentimental beings.

7. VEGANS CAN’T ENJOY FOOD OUT

Well, we think that plant-based food is available in every restaurant and vegans can have it happily. If you are going to a non-vegan restaurant, your options may get limited, but once you go to vegan restaurants, you will enjoy the food there.

Many people are turning vegan, and therefore, more and more restaurants are coming with vegan alternatives as there is huge customer demand.

Many chain restaurants like Tack bell have their own vegan menu.

There is a vegan alternative to every junk food out there.
There is a vegan alternative to every junk food out there.

8. VEGANISM IS ONLY LIMITED TO FOOD

As we say, we boycott animal products, and we don’t only do it in our food as it is not only about food. Everything from fashion, makeup, accessories that are made up of animal products we don’t use it.

More than 100 million animals are harmed every year in the production and testing, therefore, as being aware of the non-food part not using cruelty based products is the central part of being vegan.

We support cruelty free brands and believe us there are tons of them.

Cruelty free make up brushes.

So, these were some common myths about veganism that you need to stop believing right now. There are vegan versions of every junk food you know, and it is not unhealthy to follow a vegan diet.

In fact, think about the satisfaction and delight you would feel knowing that you didn’t kill any animal to fill your stomach!

There are various events, festivals, protests that are vegan centric and you must be in the loop so that you don’t lose the spirit!

How to be a vegan in 2020?
Animals are not products. Life doesn’t have a price.

2020 is the year of veganism!

More and more people are going vegan, not only by choosing a vegan diet but also by adopting a vegan lifestyle.

Vegan fashion, accessories, and beauty products are on high demand because many people are realizing that the cruelty animals face to make us look fancy is not just worth it!

Posting photographs on social media with your pets with the caption “I love animals” and then having a chicken dinner is not cool! 🙁

Because the dead-decorated dinner on your table is also an animal and deserves the same love and respect.

So, if you have taken the best decision of your life to go vegan!

Then, Kudos to you! : )

You have made the best decision for your life, health, and animals who share the lap of mother earth with us.

Now, as you have taken this decision all you need to learn is how to make this drastic transition as a beginner and live the most out of your new life.

This transition is considered difficult by many but….

Spoiler!

 It is not!

In fact, the good news is that we have laid down this handy beginner’s guide for you!

All you need to know about going vegan is listed down below!

But before jumping on what a vegan diet is and what a vegan can eat, let us first understand some basics of veganism.

Going vegan is the new cool
2020 is the year of Veganism.

What is vegan?

Vegan is anything that forbids all forms of animal exploitation and cruelty, be it in food, clothes, accessories, and entertainment.

What is the history behind the term ‘vegan’?

Vegan is a term derived by combining the first and last two letters from ‘vegetarian.’

The term vegan was put forward by a small group of vegetarians who excluded themselves from the Leicester Vegetarian Society in England in 1944.

They excluded themselves to form the vegan society that chooses not to consume any animal-derived products in addition to forbidding the meat and eggs.

What is the difference between vegetarian and vegan?

The main difference between vegan versus vegetarian is that a vegetarian will only avoid meat and eggs and can include dairy, honey, and poultry products.

But a vegan will avoid all the animal-derived products, including honey, dairy, poultry, and eggs.

What is the difference between Vegan and plant-based?

It is essential to understand the underlining difference between a vegan and a plant-based diet. It is true that both of them strictly exclude all the animal-based products, but the plant-based diet is much more inflexible when it comes to food.

A plant-based diet is actually what it echos like it is strictly a diet based on what you find in nature. Cooking and baking are okay!

But there is a big no to the processed food. Which means you can only eat a diet that includes plants.

No ice-cream, pizzas, alcohol, white flour, etc.

So, as we have understood the central concept about veganism, now let’s dive in and read about the vegan diet.

Wondering about how to be a vegan? Well, fear no more here are best plant based alternatives for animal based products.
Veganism is all about choosing a healthy lifestyle.

What is a vegan diet? A guide on foods and substitutes.

We get it!

It is overwhelming and, at the same time, very confusing for the beginners to know what they can and can’t eat as a vegan.

The most common question that beginners ask is,

What is vegan food?

What do vegans eat?

Well, well, well!!

It looks like vegan diet is the easy peasy thing in the whole universe that you can follow. In many studies, the vegan diet has been proved to be the most healthiest diet for humans.

And from the past three years, it has become cheap and easy to buy vegan food.

What vegans can eat?

You can make your Sunday morning pancakes and late-night binge-watching dinners from anything that comes directly from plants and do not come through/ with/from the help of animals.

You can always have seeds, grains, nuts, vegetables, fruits, herbs, and spices.

And just to tickle your taste buds, you can always have vegan junk food like ice cream, vegan cake, vegan butter, vegan beverages…. Etc.

What vegans can’t eat, and what are their substitutes?

  1. Vegans can’t eat meat, but instead, they can eat coconut bacon, tofu, lentil, and other options available in vegan meats.
  2. Vegans can’t consume dairy products because they are made from the breast milk of animals; instead, it can be substituted with Cashew cheese, nut milk, soya milk, coconut whipped cream, and other options available in vegan dairy products.
  3. Vegans also can’t eat honey because it is bee vomit ( ugh eww, right?) you can replace honey with date syrup, maple syrup, etc.
  4. Vegans can’t eat eggs in any form, but instead, they can eat flax seeds, chickpea flour scrambled eggs, etc.
  5. Other than this, our food industry uses many products that are animal-derived; therefore, always check the ingredients list, or the best option is to opt for stuff that has the official vegan logo embossed on it.

Now, as we have talked about the food, let’s talk about how we can make the transition process smooth.

3 Tips to make vegan transition easier

  1. Don’t rush the process: Many people quit being vegan because, initially, they just run the process. Firstly, you can start cutting back the cow’s milk with almond milk or soya milk or any other plant-derived milk options. Then you can begin replacing the meat in a hamburger with make meat; there are many vegan brands in the market.
  2.  Always remember why you started: This happens a lot of time that you forget why did you take this decision in the first place. Just as a reminder you must watch all the documentaries on veganism, or must follow a social media page that supports veganism,
  3. Don’t be hard on you: Okay, let’s face this we all grow up eating dairy and meat, it will take time to eliminate all the non-vegan food from our life. Forcing it won’t help; instead, you will end up eating an entire cheesecake or a cheese burst pizza and then will return to your melancholic mood.

Now, you know everything about being a vegan. If you have any questions about it, leave it in the comment section below!

Opinions are welcomed, too, we would love to hear your beautiful thoughts!

Have a marvelous vegan journey!  <3

What a Baby Chick has to Experience in his life?

Rohit Tripathi

Published

on

In this harrowing video, we are shown the nightmare newly hatched chicks are faced with. From their perspective. We see them cry, as they try and fail to attract their mothers. Chicks that hatch in facilities connected to commercial food production will never know their mother’s embrace and the safety that brings. They are forced on to seemingly endless conveyor belts, where they are dropped and slammed about, with not a shred of kindness shown to them. One chick is even shown with its leg stuck in the conveyer belt as it is being pulled away.

In these types of facilities, hatchlings never see their mothers. Mother hens have their eggs taken from them to be hatched in hatcheries, using artificial methods to get the eggs to hatch. Through selective breeding chicks raised for the meat industry are deformed, making them larger, but unable to support themselves. They are killed within hours of hatching, never leaving the hatchery. As male chicks can not produce eggs, they are of no use to commercial egg farms and are shredded alive by industrial machinery.

First-Person Perspective

We get to see the nightmarish beginning of these chicks lives through their eyes, in this covert video. The horrendous conditions and suffering they are put through, only to be brutally killed. This recording was taken by an undercover Israeli Organization ‘Animals Now’. These conditions are not unique to Israel and are a widespread standard across the world.
